Application for Membership of Kvevri-Wine-Association,
Tbilisi, Georgia
During more than ten years of advertising campaigns for Georgian wines, in western countries, the traditional kvevri wines from Georgia have become well known.
Consumers as well as producers worldwide are taking an interest in the unique features of Georgian kvevri wine, i.e. a wine variety made in clay vessels, according to traditional methods.
As their wines have become more recognized, Georgian winegrowers have taken up again the production and marketing of kvevri wine. A few European winegrowers have also started to make wine in kvevris, selling it under the name of amphorae wine.
Detailed knowledge about traditional wine making in kvevri is still debated, not only abroad but also in Georgia. It is therefore a matter of controversy. Such rather controversial debates badly damage the good reputation Georgian kvevri wines had re-gained in the recent past.
The Kvevri-Wine-Association has made it their business to maintain traditional wine-making in kvevri, to preserve the bio-diversity of grape varieties, and to support small scale producers with the organization of sustainable viticulture.
The association introduces their manifesto and projects on www.kvevri-wine.org.
On www.kvevri-wine-standard.com
a framework for the traditional making of kvevri wines is provided and can be upgraded. There is also a forum for discussions and
amendments.
We invite national and international winegrowers to become members of the association and participate in different projects, exchange, improve and pass on knowledge of traditional wine-making in clay vessels.
